Jasmins' 92-93

The first Oscillate was on May 27th 1992 at a very small club in Birmingham called Jasmin's, maximum capacity 120 people.We did'nt know much about what we were doing at this stage,& none of us had dj'd or organised a club night before, but it came together pretty quickly.

One of the main inspirations for starting a night ourselves ,& for getting into electronic music in a big way,was from going to fundementals in london.These were underground nights which took place in some maze like rehersal rooms ,& they were our first experience of hearing musicians such as orbitol,pentatonik,pressure of speech,headspace,the drum club & others ,all playing out of sight in an endless mix of live acts & dj's.The enviroment was chaotic,creative,& unlike anything we had experienced before.

As latecomers to the underground dance scene, having previously been caught up within the more so called 'real' band side of things, these events made a major impression on us

At the first one only about 8 people came, the second about 25, but word soon got around of this new & different type of night in birmingham -more used to a choice between indie nights,handbaghouse or hardcore - & soon a regular crowd of into it people started tripping up the staircase

At the early oscillates, apart from the learn as you go along style djing,bobby bird brought along various bits of equipment & started to experiment with it live,hidden away behind the decks ,which became the begining of hia.Other acts who played at these early oscillates, were headspace from london ,pentatonik, banco de gaia and a positive life from bradford.

This last was one of the craziest nights - a whole coachload from up north turned up & we made a lot of new friends that night, some of whom would become involved in future oscillates.

However our days at jasmins were numbered.The club owner started to moan about not enough beer bieng drunk,& we knew the time had come to leave when we turned up at the club to find he'd had the plumber in to remove the top off the cold taps .So after opening the water up again with a wrench & having an excellent last night there, we moved on.

(shortly afterwards jasmins was closed down after an undercover news of the world reporter got in to expose one of the club owners own nights - a wife swapping club. And he thought our nights were strange...)
